Team Tough's Zombie 5k and Fun Run

Calling All Team Tough Members! 

In February 2020 our son, Miles, was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia.  Aplastic Anemia is a rare, life threatening condition that occurs when your bone marrow stops making cells.  Miles' only hope for a cure was a bone marrow transplant, which he underwent in May at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.  The past 6 months have been incredibly difficult for our family and, although we have faced many challenges, we consider ourselves lucky in many ways...our incredible Team Tough that has supported us and continues to support us, the amazing pediatric transplant team and nurses at Hershey Med. and our family, who dropped everything to get us through some of our darkest days.  

October marks 150 days post transplant and gives us another reason to celebrate, as Miles' blood counts are stable and nearly in normal range!  We are asking that you all join us in our celebration by participating in our 5K Team Tough Zombie Run! 

Miles spent over a month confined to a hospital room with little entertainment and limited visitors (COVID-19 restrictions only allowed one parent at a time). We were lucky enough to have the support from our family and Team Tough members who supplied us with video game consoles, toys, books and more Facetime calls than we could have ever imagined. For some families, due to distance or other obstacles, this level of support is not always possible.  Many children are hospitalized without much entertainment and many families do not have the privilege that would allow them to provide a constant parent to accompany their child throughout their stay.

 Our family has been anxious to give back to the programs and medical teams that gave our son another chance at a long, healthy life.  All proceeds from this race will go towards the purchase of entertainment consoles and technology that will be utilized by long term pediatric patients at Hershey Med.  Our donations will be sent to the Child Life department at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital, which is a program for pediatric patients that provides, emotional support, entertainment and special services to inpatient children.  If you would like to learn more about Child Life, click on this link:  https://childrens.pennstatehealth.org/patients-families-and-visitors/support-and-coping-services/child-life

Participants in the race will receive a one of a kind Team Tough Zombie Run 5k T-shirt AND medal! Trophies will be awarded to the winners of several special categories.  Please join us as we help to make extended hospital stays a little bit easier for pediatric patients!
