What started as a 5th grade school project, expanded into reality. For the 2016 race, I sought permission from city hall, mapped the route, arranged for police help, created a website, & even received non-profit status under the 501(c)(3) umbrella of HandsOn Texarkana. Through interviews & speaking, the event was publicized in several local newspapers, magazines, radio stations, & even the Scholastic Newsletter, which is published nationally.
After the success of the Inaugural Six Leg Fun Run & 5k event, Shelby’s P.A.W.S. (a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization) was brought to life. I contacted several community leaders, teachers, & people that have influenced me to be on my Board of Directors. Shelby’s P.A.W.S. mission is to promote youth volunteerism within our community; encourage animal adoption, spay/neuter; & encourage others to be community leaders & advocates.
The funds raised will purchase an adoption trailer that will be utilized by the Animal Care & Adoption Center of Texarkana to transport shelter pets to community events, hold pet health clinics encouraging spay/neuter, and offer micro-chipping. The climate controlled environment of the trailer will make all the animals more comfortable traveling and during events in Miller and Bowie Counties. The trailer can turn into an emergency unit during times of disaster, saving numerous animals’ lives during times of turmoil and abandonment. A major example of this came in the spring of 2015 when the Red River flooded to a point of major distress for Texarkana for over a month.
I love my community and can see through my own volunteer work how much better it is… or maybe it is because I feel so much better. Volunteering can be hard, especially in an animal shelter, but it is also rewarding and heartwarming. I want to spread that feeling throughout my community.
Your donation will be greatly appreciated!
