This was my first triathlon race ever in California after more than thirty races in the Midwest including a few in the Mideast and Southeast. I flew into San Francisco and rented a car and a bike. I am not racing this year, 20/20,: because of the pandemic. I really loved the Golden State Triathlon for three reasons: 1) a flat course that is easily navigated, 2) the novelty of a river swim starting on a sand bar, and 3) the food and hospitality. Highly recommended for a beginner or triathlon veteran!

Always a great race. Flat and fair. Get a flat, and you probably can still get caught up. Swimming up river current is a nice little unspoken challenge depending upon the year. Sac River may only be a stream in 2022? Solid training, best case scenario for pro-triathlon athletes tying to work up their confidence. If you can do this in less than 2.5hrs and go have brunch afterwards, then you’re kinda on point!
