2017 Train To Hunt Challenge Details

In an effort to make the Train To Hunt Challenge events more family friendly, and less of a time commitment, we have gone to a one day format. The Hunters 3D Shoot will be the morning event that will kick off around 9am and the afternoon event will be the Challenge Course. I know some of you veterans out there are going to miss the grinding Meat Pack event, but I bet you won’t miss it that much.

Kids Events

In Addition we have added three kids events that will be set up like novelty shoots but will consist of a mix of physical challenges and shooting. Each event will have winners in three different kids divisions:

  • Teen Division 13-19
  • 9-12 year old Division
  • 8 year old & Under Division

*There is NOT separate boys and girls divisions

*Each competitor will need to bring their own bow

You will be able to buy an unlimited pass for your kids at any of the booths that will be good for all the kids events throughout the day. They can do each of the events as many times as they want and the top performers in each division will have their name announced and will receive some great prizes at the beginning of the awards ceremony at the end of the day.

Hunters 3D Shoot (100 pts)

In the morning hours competitors will have their shooting skills put to the test. Over a span of 19 targets they will be faced with a variety of hunting scenario shots. These include, but are not limited to, shooting from a kneeling position, draw and hold, shooting from an elevated position, draw and shoot in 5 seconds, draw and move, and the ever popular follow up shot where competitors have to reload and get a second arrow off in 10 seconds. All the targets are scored 5 points for a heart shot, 3 points for a lung shot, and 1 point for any shot sticking in the target outside the lung ring.

With 100 points possible, competitors will earn as many points for this event as they earn on the course.

Challenge Course (150 pts)

In the afternoon, participants will race through a series of 5 physical challenges, cover approximately 2 miles, and shoot 6 arrows. The course is broken into two parts, the Challenge Course and the Mountain Course. These courses are timed and scored as one event.

During the Challenge Course competitors will be doing 5 physical challenges, 5 loop runs, and shooting 4 arrows at a known distant 3D target. During this portion of the event competitors will not be wearing a pack, or be required to carry their bow.

This event will test everything from movement efficiency to shooting under pressure. In the end, the competitors who shoot well will be rewarded with time deductions, and those who shoot poorly will be penalized.

How the Challenge Course is scored

  • Competitors/Teams are given a “RUN TIME” which is the amount of time it takes you or your team to complete the event.
  • We adjust your time according to how you shoot each target.
  • Heart Shot (10 ring) = minus 30 seconds
  • Lung Shot (8 ring) = no penalty / no reward
  • Body Shot (Outside 8 ring but not a miss) = plus 30 seconds
  • MISS = 20 BURPEES (no time penalty)
  • Competitors/Teams are given an adjusted time and put into order fastest to slowest
  • The fastest time in each division is awarded 150 points
  • The second place finisher in each division starts with 149 points and is penalized 2 point for every 30 seconds they finish behind the winner.
  • The third place finisher will start 1 point lower than the second place finisher and is penalized 2 points for every 30 seconds they finish behind second place.
  • This pattern continues until all finishers are awarded points.

 Determining An Overall Winner

The competitor or team that has earned the most points over the course of the two events wins. Competitors or teams that place top four in each division will earn their spot at the 2017 Train To Hunt National Championships held on July 8th and 9th in Grand Junction, Colorado.
