The Ashley Forever Memorial 5K Run/2 Mile Walk is in Memory of Ashley Montgomery. Ashley is the definition of a True Hero, A Savior. Ashley Battled cancer 4 times. Her Strength, Courage, Bravery, Positive, Never Give Up Attitude Inspired So Many. Ashley was originally diagnosed with cancer at 9. It was a brain tumor (Cancer of the Central Nervous System). It came back at the age of 16. Radiation was the only known cure for her cancer. At 16, almost 17, we decided that Ashley was old enough to make decisions for her treatment. We were there to advise her, but in the end, it was her body, she was the one going through everything, she made the final decisions. She was a St. Jude patient and her doctor there would have only done radiation treatment. Her doctor here in Chicago, asked her to try a drug as well. A drug only used on adults before and only used for no longer than a year. They wanted her to take it for 2 years. I discovered this drug could cause a secondary cancer and told Ashley this and told her that she did not have to take it, that she could just get her radiation and be done. She said, "But isn't that how we find cures, by trying new treatments, and I am willing to take that chance if it means that other children do not have to go through what I have or worse." in 2014 at the age of 23, Ashley was diagnosed with that very deadly secondary cancer. She beat it once as it was gone for 18 months, but it returned in August 2016, a month before her 25th Birthday. Ashley fought like no one I had ever seen. She fought through so much pain and she fought so hard because she wanted to live so badly. She wanted to become a Pediatric Oncologist, when she knew that dream was getting further out of reality, she decided to become a Pediatric Oncology Nurse Practitioner. On April 21, 2017, My Very Kind, Caring, Selfless Daughter Went to Heaven. Ashley sacrificed her Life for others and as hard as it is for me to get through each day without My Ashley, I must continue her Legacy. Ashley was the Vice President of the Foundation and spent all her free time dedicated to the foundation and helping families. She also spent a lot of her free time speaking at events for St. Jude, to help raise funds.
