Mountain Mining Days Marathon Relay Race Description

MOUNTAIN MINING MARATHON TEAM (RUN/WALK) RELAY
Walsenburg, Colorado, Sunday, August 28, 2016, 7:30 a.m. Start
at Miner’s Plaza, 6th and Main in downtown Walsenburg, Colorado. Runners will head west on city streets before leaving town on Second Street which becomes County Road 599 which is bordered by a dirt/gravel bike path. 2.8 miles from the start, runners will turn south through a gateway into beautiful Black Diamond Park (BDP) along Black Diamond Drive. After continuing to the south gateway entrance, where all relay exchanges will take place, 10 loops of the paved BDP roads will be completed (approximately 1.9 miles per loop) by participants in whatever strategic manner the team choses with the only requirement being that all relay exchanges will take place at the single designated point near the south entrance of BDP. The final leg of the marathon relay will essentially retrace the path of the leg 1 runners along the county road/bike path, and city streets with the finish line being at 4th and Main downtown which is just north of the Huerfano County Courthouse. Participants will then walk the two blocks back to Miner’s Plaza where refreshments and awards will be available. Each of the first 50 participants will receive an individual medal with team awards going to the Mountain Mining Marathon Champions, two runner up teams and to the winner of the Mountain Mining Spirit Award (based on such considerations as team spirit displayed, costumes, or creative depiction of “Mountain Mining spirit” as determined by race officials).

Walsenburg is a small town in southern Colorado fondly remembering it’s past as a coal mining boom town. While we don’t envision runners and walkers lugging picks and shovels over their shoulders, we encourage participants to creatively embrace the mining theme to celebrate “Mountain Mining Days” at this unique (as you will see) event.

AMAZING RACE

Ben does an amazing job with this event! No race could happen without volunteers and Ben had plenty. Thanks to Ben and the volunteers and of course the sponsors! The course is challenging but the event is so much fun it is well worth the blood, sweat and tears! See you next year!
