Color Me Cameron Race Description

The “Color Me Cameron” is a Celebration of Life with a whirlwind of color that will blow you away!  It is not about how fast you can go, but how much fun you will have along the way.

The “Color Me Cameron” is completely representative of Cameron.  The first part of the route was Cameron’s paper route when he was 12 years old.  The 2nd half of the route is part of the New River Valley Trail where he and his dad would run. The door prizes represent Cameron’s love for community and giving.  The color represents Cameron’s outgoing personality and is purchased in Colorado where he wanted to live after college.  The laughter, love, and friendships shared during the “Color Me Cameron” are all a part of Cameron.

The “Color Me Cameron” is an un-timed event in which participants begin dressed in white and are doused from head to toe in different colors at 10 Color Stations throughout the route. The fun continues after all runners/walkers complete the route with an unforgettable After Party that includes music, dancing, awesome door prizes, and more color.

The money needed to purchase supplies for the “Color Me Cameron” is raised each year prior to the event allowing all participant fees to go directly to the scholarships.

Get your family, friends, and coworkers together for an explosive good time!

Mission and Purpose

The Cameron Fitzwater Memorial Scholarship Foundation was created to celebrate the life of Cameron Taylor Fitzwater by allowing his life and aspirations to live on by helping others pursue their dreams of higher education, as he had planned to do in the fall of 2012.  The Cameron Fitzwater Memorial Scholarship Foundation is about turning tragedy into triumph while developing community spirit and giving.

In Cameron’s memory, four $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually to Pulaski County High School graduating seniors.  A committee of administrators, faculty, and staff select the 4 recipients each year who best meet the following requirements:

â–ªMust be accepted into a 2 year or 4 year College/University or a Technical School.

â–ªMust have participated in one or more of the following activities that Cameron enjoyed:  Boy Scouts, Choir, Drama, MACC Academic Team, Track, Wrestling, and/or Young Life.

â–ªWrite an essay on one of two specified topics.

Cameron’s Story

On a rainy Wednesday afternoon, April 4, 2012, Cameron was driving to work after school as he had done so many times before.  Cameron known for living his life to its fullest tragically died in a car accident.  Cameron was only 18; just two months shy of graduation with plans to attend WVU in the fall.

To look at Cameron you would see an ordinary kid, but to meet him was an entirely different story. Cameron eluded love and compassion towards others far beyond our small-town limits. Cameron, known for living life to its fullest, but more importantly for living his life OUT LOUD.  He touched so many lives in his short time here on earth, and he continues to touch lives today through the good works he left behind and the legacy he left in the hearts of all who knew him.

Cameron was extremely active in school and in the community. He was Captain of the Wrestling Team, Captain of the Math MACC Academic Team, participated in Choir, Drama, Track, Young Life, and Boy Scouts where he was an accomplished Eagle Scout. In addition to attending Pulaski County High School, he also attended the Southwest Virginia Governor's School for Math and Science.

Cameron loved his town and volunteered as often as he could.  He grew up volunteering with the local Habitat for Humanity helping in the office, fundraising, volunteering at the Habitat Restore and with the construction of many Habitat houses. He volunteered cutting down fallen trees, and removing debris out of the roadways in 2011 when a tornado hit Pulaski.  Cameron continued his volunteer efforts with Samaritan’s Purse in the days following.  As a Boy Scout, he was involved in numerous service projects throughout the community and at Camp Ottari and Camp Powhatan.  Wherever he could help, he was there.

Cameron loved the outdoors and its beauty.  He enjoyed camping, hiking, rock climbing, zip lining, and was an avid kayaker.  With his vast array of interests and activities.  It is as if God took all the crayons in the world and scribbled him inside and out.

He is remembered for his adventurous spirit, his outgoing personality, his sense of humor, his love of life, his huge bear hugs, and his contagious smile.  Friends, teachers, and community leaders describe Cameron as “talented”, “gifted”, “a natural leader”, “a smile that lit up our lives”, “an outgoing, fun-loving student who stood up for others,” “he captured the spirit of all people, where their passions were…people that didn't know him directly still knew of him because he was full of life, full of zeal, enthusiasm." It has been said by those who knew Cameron, “He brought color to a gray world.”  He inspired others to love God, appreciate nature, live big, dream big, embrace their fears, and to never give up.

Cameron wrote; “Kindle the fire within yourself. Use its light to stay the path. No matter how hard it gets stay ever cheerful.” This is how Cameron lived his life every day.

We look forward to seeing you there!
