Bear Lake Monster Swim Race Description

Do you dare swim with the Bear Lake Monster?

The Bear Lake Monster Swim is a 10K point-to-point swim across the width of Bear Lake.  The swim is open to solo swimmers and 2 to 6-person relay teams.  All solo swimmers must provide their own support paddler.  Relay teams are responsible for providing their own support craft, large enough to hold all team members.

If you are new to open water, or are more of a sprinter than a distance swimmer, check out our 1 mile and 1/2 mile races. These swims will take place near the Bear Lake State Park Marina. Both swims will be out-and-back.

All 10K solo swimmers are REQUIRED to have their own kayak support.

Swimmers are welcome to wear a safety buoy such as the New Wave Swim Buoy.

Tentative Schedule of Events:

Friday July 28, 2023
6:00pm - Pot luck dinner and swimmer check-in at the pavilion north of the marina

Saturday July 29, 2022
7:00am - Swimmer check-in
7:45am - Pre-race meeting
8:00am - Start of the race

2:00pm - Event cut-off time (all remaining swimmers removed from course)

Swimmers are encouraged to have someone pick them up at the finish line and transport them and their kayak back to the marina.  Shuttle service will be extremely limited.

Parking

Swimmers will receive a parking pass via email that will need to be displayed in their vehicle.  Swimmers will meet at the Bear Lake State Park Marina in Garden City for check-in, body marking, packet pickup, etc.  The swim will start in the water just north of the Bear Lake Marina and will on the opposite side of the lake at Cisco Beach.

UTAH TRIPLE CROWN AND MINI TRIPLE CROWN

Utah Triple Crown

The 10K solo swim is one of three swims that make up the Utah Triple Crown. The other two swims are the 10K swim at the Great Salt Lake and the 10 mile swim at Deer Creek Reservoir.

Swimmers who complete all three of these swims in the same year will receive the Utah Triple Crown award at the annual Salt Lake Open Water (SLOW) awards dinner.

Mini Triple Crown

The Mini Triple Crown consists of three one mile swims at the Great Salt Lake Open Water Swim, Bear Lake (this event), and Deer Creek Open Water Marathon Swim.  Swimmers who complete all three one-mile swims in the same year will receive an award at the annual Salt Lake Open Water (SLOW) awards dinner.

We are offering a discounted bundle for anyone who is interested in doing the Utah Triple Crown or the Mini Triple Crown.

A real challenge, fulfilling and beautiful

It was a beautiful day to swim. Water temp was perfect at 71, and it was smooth almost all the way across. The Coast Guard support craft seemed to be in sight at all times. This was my first Bear Lake swim - a good deal more difficult than the 10k at Deer Creek reservoir, a full 45 minutes longer. It was long, long, long, but very fulfilling to have done it. The 10k started at 9, which is a bit late for such events I think, but the swimming channel was completely clear of boats. The weak spot in the organization is getting back to the starting-point side of the lake after the swim. But we worked it out with a fellow swimmer and prepositioned a vehicle at the end-point.

Bohdan Olevych Ukraine

United States. State of Utah. Open water. Utah Triple Crown Open Water Swimming Series 👑👑👑. The first leg of the Bear Lake Monster Swim. After not swimming in open water for a long time, Bohdan Olevych and I decided to try a short distance. One mile. After the initial struggle, Bohdan ended up third. But by the middle of the way he came out on top. An unpleasant mistake at the finish (he did not get between the finish buoys) prevented Bohdan from winning. As a result, the second place in the absolute standings. Then the second stage. We are getting ready.
