American Legion Walk and 5K for Veterans Race Description

The 3rd Annual American Legion 5K and Walk for Veterans Coming to Douglasville

WE WALK & RUN for those who MARCHED FOR US

DOUGLASVILLE, GEORGIA (February 25, 2019) – The American Legion has just announced that it will hold its 3rd Annual 5K Run and Walk for Veterans through Boundary Waters Park in Douglasville, GA on April 13th, 2019. Hosting the 5K Run and Walk will be Frank P. Dorris American Legion Post 145 Commander Tommy Coursey, and the entire Post 145 Legion Family (Sons of the American Legion, Legion Auxiliary, and Legion Riders).

The purpose of the 5K and Walk is to raise public awareness about the National Emergency Fund. The American Legion website, www.legion.org, states: “The Preamble to The American Legion Constitution sums up the theme of the National Emergency Fund, "... devotion to mutual helpfulness." This phrase is more than just mere words on paper; it's our pledge of support to Legionnaires and their family members. Since the early 1920s, The American Legion has been actively involved in meeting the needs of both the community and individual Legion Family members in the wake of disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and wildfires.

The National Emergency Fund, created in response to Hurricane Hugo in 1989, has provided more than $8 million in direct financial assistance to American Legion Family members and posts. By providing this emergency funding, NEF has prevented damaged posts from closing and enabled American Legion Family members to recover from tragedy.

NEF helps those affected by well-known disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy; lesser-publicized tragedies such as flooding in South Dakota and Illinois; wildfires in the southwest; more recently, the tornadoes in Southern Georgia near Albany in 2017; and Hurricane Michael, that left great devastation in South Georgia, Florida, and Alabama in late 2018.  We are running and walking for those who have marched for freedom.  Many are no longer able to do so for themselves, due to the impacts from these disasters.

The 5K and Walk will begin at 9:30a.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2019, with check-in beginning at 8:00a.m.  The length of the walk is 1.0 mile and will be held at the same time as the 5K Run at Boundary Waters Park, 5000 Georgia Highway 92/166, Douglasville, Georgia 30135.

Proceeds will benefit the National Emergency Fund.

The registration fee is $25.00* and will include a runner’s “swag bag”, with t-shirt and other items from our sponsors.  For more information about The American Legion Walk for Veterans and 5K Run or to register, please email kimberly.j.schatz@hotmail.com or call 770-617-5124 or 770-949-2631.

**For those that register after April 1, 2019, American Legion Post 145 is unable to guarantee your T-shirt size will be available on the day of the race, or that your swag bag will include all items.  Please register early!**
