Race Description

Be a part of the Miracle on Kansas Avenue by joining other runners and walkers for the 12th annual MKA Rescue Run on the actual parade route starting at 5:00 PM; one hour before the parade begins. Since you'll be leading the parade, all Rescue Run participants will receive glow items in their packet and are encouraged to wear numerous lights and holiday costumes, so bring more of your own lights and "light up the night!"

The 2017 Rescue Run route will be identical to the 2016 route which includes some of its' original Four Mile course in addition to the most recent 5K courses, and will also include running through the tunnel under the south steps of the State Capitol on the first lap.

Team competition returns for 2017 in both Corporate and Church Member categories. Want to participate but not able to join us on race day? Register and let us know that you won't be able to attend and we'll get your packet to you. Send us a picture from wherever you are by running the “Virtual Rescue Run” and you'll be entered to win our "Long Distance" award.

ALL Runners will start at 5:00 PM and will do two loops of the parade route (3.1 miles total) from the start line located in 100 block of West 6th Avenue, to the finish line located north of the start line at 534 S Kansas Ave. Walkers will also start at 5:00 PM and may do one loop of the parade route (1.5 miles total), or two loops (3.1 miles total), finishing at the same location. Walkers are eligible to run, walk, or do a combination of both running and walking and must finish or exit the course prior to the parade start at 6:00 pm.

Those registered as Runners will be officially timed with timing chips attached to their bib numbers and must complete both loops of the race course in order to be eligible for any awards.

Those registered as walkers will not be officially timed but can note their finish time by the clock located at the finish line.

All preregistered participants will receive a technical T-shirt with their entry fee. Late entrants cannot be guaranteed T-shirt availability. All participants are eligible to win any of the fabulous door prizes that have been provided by generous area merchants. Awards will be presented to the top three overall male and female finishers, to the first male and female Masters finishers (age 40-49), to the first male and female Grand Masters finishers (age 50-59), and to the first male and female Senior Grand Masters finishers (over 60). Age group awards will be presented to the first three male and female finishers in the following age group categories: 8 & Under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15, 16-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85 & Up

Traveling trophies will be awarded to the 1st place team in both Corporate and Church Member categories. Teams must consist of at least five team members and the fastest combined finish times of the three fastest members of each team will determine the winner in both categories. Team members are also eligible to receive any applicable overall or age group award that they may receive as a result of their performance.

For insurance purposes and the safety of all involved, runners are not allowed to push strollers. Walkers may do so as long as they start at the rear of the pack and do not block the progress of runners at any time during the event. ALL participants are required to wear their race number, visible on their front side at all times during the event. ALL participants are instructed to position themselves in the proper area of the pack at the start line so as to not impede the progress of faster participant's behind them. NO participant may wear headsets, earphones, or ear buds, skates or rollerblades, or bring animals or bikes on the race course at any time during the event. The race course will be closed to all vehicle traffic until the parade start at 6:00 PM but please be aware of, and alert for spectators who may get in the way as they attempt to travel to their preferred position along the parade route. All participants must sign and date the waiver and correctly complete the attached registration form.

Per instructions from the Topeka Police Department - All participants are instructed to perform all warm-up and warm-down activities on the sidewalks and NOT in the streets except for immediately before the start of the Rescue Run at 5:00 PM.

Free parking will be available in the area north and west of the finish line which is located in the 500 block of S Kansas Avenue. 2016 Race Review
Review On:
2016

I left this event feeling the course is repetitive and lackluster; I missed the turn for the 2nd lap because of unclear markings; the front runners were lapping myself and others adding to confusion; competitive runners were stumbling over unattended children, slower runners, and parade participants in the street; barriers in the middle of the course; etc. I do appreciate the volunteers and online registration abilities, but feel like the race course itself could use much improvement.
