Dear fellow sloth lover,
We’d like you to help us with the first Great Sloth Run, a 5k event to raise funds to benefit the conservation of sloths through our partner, the Sloth Conservation Foundation.
Sloths are a charismatic species that are facing numerous threats, and they are largely human caused. Deforestation, inbreeding, exploitation for the tourist/pet trade just to name a few issues. On top of that, there is little research on overall sloth populations, making it difficult to know the conservation status of different species across different countries.
Race location: Bon Air Park and the Bluemont Trail
The race will start at the picnic shelter at Bon Air Park. Packet pickup and registration will begin at 10:00 AM EDT.
Time: Race starts at 11:30 AM EDT – Registration and check in will begin at 10:00 AM EDT. There will be one single heat for the race. Participants will start lining up at 11:20 after walking over from the picnic shelter
Packet pickup: Packet pickup will be held on the day of the race at check-in at 10:00 AM EDT.
Race route: The race will be run along the Bluemont Trail. The race will begin along the Bluemont Trail starting at the overpass, at Patrick Henry Drive, as seen at this link, and the image below.
Participants will run down the Bluemont Trail, and then north towards George Mason Boulevard. Participants will then turnaround and head back down the trail towards the beginning of the race, and then cross the finish line. Participants will then gather back at the picnic shelter for closing remarks and the awards ceremony.
Participants will be given a t-shirt, as per the above design, and a medal, following the design shown above.
Givebutter is going to be our fundraising partner for this event. We're asking everyone to raise a minimum of $200 USD for this run, but ideally $300 to have the maximum impact possible for sloth conservation. Together, we can make a direct difference for sloths. See you on the 3rd!
