Monongalia County Child Advocacy Center Be A Hero For Kids 5K Race Description

The 3rd annual Monongalia County Child Advocacy Center Be a Hero for Kids 5K will take place on a scenic, point and return course in August 2017. The race will begin at the Tug Boat Depot at the Star City Marina and will proceed on the rail trail along the Monongahela River. The trail is flat and mostly shaded. Runners/Walkers will go a little over 1.5 miles before turning around and continuing to the finish line. The event also includes a post-race meal and post-race festivities for the whole family, including: yoga in the park for children & adults, live music, a superhero costume contest, character appearances, and much more! Register before August 1, 2017 to receive early bird pricing! We welcome, groups, teams, and individuals.

Child abuse is a crime of secrecy, but it exists in all communities, including ours. One in four children will witness or experience a traumatic event by the age of four. Last year, 96 children were interviewed at our Center due to concerns about child abuse. A total of 451 children and their family members sought out our free trauma-focused services that included providing 1,160 individual and 56 group therapy sessions.

The data is alarming and local. However, these statistics represent a journey of healing that began with the courage of one child that came to our Child Advocacy Center (CAC) in distress. Now, we're asking our community to step up and be a hero for kids! All proceeds of the Be a Hero for Kids 5K will directly support our services with children and families in Monongalia County.

Come dressed as your favorite superhero and support a local organization working each day to keep kids and families in our community safe, happy, and healthy!

Nice race

Race was great, timing chips used and route was a Full 3.1 miles. My only comment would be to be more clear on how the age groups are arranged, and that men & women were lumped together (so very hard for a female to place). The raffle prizes were amazing and the boxed lunches were a great bonus. Would love to see this on the MAGP series!
