MEDLIFE Race to Peru Description

Our MEDLIFE chapter at Wheeling Jesuit University is hosting a 5K - RAIN OR SHINE - to raise money for our medical service trip to Lima, Peru this upcoming August.  The event will be held at Wheeling Jesuit University, starting in front of Donahue Hall. On top of fundraising for our own trip, a portion of our profit will also be used to sponsor the MEDLIFE Rosa Morocho House Project that is going to be held in Peru this spring - help us fundraise!  Check-in will begin at 12 o'clock noon on Sunday, April 2nd, and the race will begin at 1:30. Before the race begins, we will be having a blessing of the runners at the starting line. We encourage people to register online before the event, and any registration before March 25th guarantees a pre-ordered 5K t-shirt included in your registration fee (passed that date a t-shirt will have to be purchased separate). Registration can be completed the day of the event for $35 (cash only).  We hope to see you there!

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course for the 5K offers an all terrain and scenic view that shows all of what the Wheeling Jesuit campus offers by looping past the dorm and classroom buildings, as well as trekking by the outer boundaries of the campus along Wheeling creek, the athletic facilities and the WJU community garden. The course is perfect for everyone looking to enjoy a run/walk 5K with the added peace of mind that your participation is all in effort to fund a great cause!

The Course begins in front of Donahue hall where check-in will take place and will take a left through Campion/McHugh parking lot onto Ignatian Way. The course continues on Ignatian Way past Sara Tracy/Kirby dormitory hall and will take a right into the CET Circle and loop behind Erma Ora Byrd Center that houses CET recital hall, the NASA classroom, and the Challenger Learning Center. After looping behind the building, the course runs on the sidewalk behind the upper Emily LaRosa athletic field into the NTTC parking lot and will take a right back onto Ignatian Way towards the campus Entrance. The course will loop back up Ignatian Way after turning back at the security booth where the course reaches 1000 meters. After looping back up the hill the course takes a right past NTTC and Whelan Hall through the parking lot and will pass Hodges Library, then pass Thomas S. Acker S.J. Science center and loops around the Ignatius upper parking lot before taking a right down in front of Ignatius Residence hall. The course will continue down the hill past the Campion McHugh and Thomas Moore residence halls; at the bottom of the hill, the course reaches 2000 meters, and then continues across the road and will follow behind Alma Grace McDonough Center and loops around the field along Wheeling creek. The course goes down the first hill, bringing it closer to the lower landing by wheeling creek and continues along the path before entering the lower trail towards Kroger where the course reaches 3000 meters. The course then loops back for a short distance and reaches a small hill on the right that makes its way towards the parking lot of Sara Tracy, and before reaching the lot, the course continues on the next trail through the woods and at the end will take a left turn passing the WJU community garden. Runners will continue through the parking lot and back onto the road leading to the backside of the Bishop Schmitt athletic field and will follow along the field towards the large grass field where a large right turn will be made, bringing you back in front of the McDonough center at 4000 meters, and will continue through the parking lot and take a left onto Ignatian Way for a short distance before the course takes a right on the road between Thomas Moore hall and Campion hall that will take a right onto Acker Science Center Access road until reaching the lower parking lot where the runners will cross under the bridge connecting Acker Science Center and Donahue hall till reaching the intersection.  A right will be made at the intersection, followed by a quick left after the campus coffee shop before running on the rim of the lawn in front of Donahue, which offers a great view of the Bishop Schmitt athletic field. This will bring you to the last turn back onto the sidewalk in front of Donahue where the course started to your finish at 5000 meters. A map of the course is provided on our website that shows the approximate course loop and distances. Go register now and enjoy everything our course has to offer and know all proceeds are going to a great cause.
