Atlantic Beach, South Carolina, fondly known as The Black Pearl, is a historically rich African American community in Horry County, South Carolina.

Dividing the Town of North Myrtle Beach along the Grand Strand, Atlantic Beach is the only remaining African American owned and governed beach municipality in the country.

This community was founded on October 11, 1934, when George Tyson, an astute African American business owner, purchased 47 acres of land along the ocean front to provide residences for the “colored workers” who served the white establishments along the Grand Strand. With that purchase, Mr. Tyson developed a segregated beach community for the “colored” workers, their families, and their friends along the South Carolina Grand Strand.

Today, even with continued physical barriers between the communities, economic challenges and independent governing bodies, we celebrate the fact that Atlantic Beach has been sustained as a historic district owned and governed by African Americans for 90 years.  This year’s Atlantic Beach Annual Fun Run highlights the community’s storied 90-year history and celebrates the thriving community of the future being created.
