I had never heard of the Norwegian Foot March until two months ago when I watched a YouTube video about the event. After a little research I found that a NFM was being held at Ft. Benning, GA. I immediately signed up as soon as I could. I love the fact that this is open to civilians as well as the military. The course was very challenging. There were a lot of hills to contend with. Most of my training was on level ground so this was tough on me. The fact that it was hard makes it worthwhile. PRO: The check-in was quick and easy. Transportation was provided to the starting point. The event started earlier than usual at 9:00 pm. This is nice for those of us traveling. This allows for a little more sleep before checking out the next day. The out and back route is simple. The entire distance was on a paved road. Each mile was clearly marked. I liked the fact that it was held at night as the temperature was cooler. Using the red head lamp made me focus on the center white lines and moving one step at a time so I wouldn't be overwhelmed by the distance in front of me. The certificates were ready and available as soon as we arrived back at the stadium. CON: I brought a full canteen of water with me. The one time that I stopped on the way back, I was only allowed a small refill. The soldier advised that it was the last of the water and he had to "make it count." Also, there was quite a bit of vehicle traffic along the route. Headlights in the face at night were uncomfortable. TIP: Obtain a visitor's pass at the main gate before hand. Overall it was a great experience. During the event I swore I would never attempt this again and that it was a "One and Done' event. Now I plan on coming back next year for my silver badge! Always a little further.
