About Malama Huleia

Mālama Hulē‘ia advocates, educates, and leads community efforts to remove mangrove along theHule‘ia river. They work to re‐establish native wetland ecosystems, manage the 600-800 year old Hawaiian fishpond, Alakoko through community and educational stewardship programs that perpetuate Hawaiian practices and values. Their vision is to bring back a free-flowing, healthy and productive Hulē‘ia ecosystem, sustaining our community culturally, physically, and spiritually, while perpetuating community pride.

Malama Hulē‘ia is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2015 by a group of canoe paddlers and environmental stewards that recognized the need to take action toward restoring the Hulē‘ia river and save the ancient Hawaiian fishpond from the overtake of invasive mangrove. The non-profit is now a leading organization in bringing back Hawaiian practice through education and stewardship. Malama Hulē‘ia has had students from every school on the island visit and participate in restoring Alakoko fishpond and now have an online curriculum to expand the learning experience.
