$438 Raised for Lucy Robbins Welles Library

Charity Goal: $6,000
Money Raised: $438

Every year the Board of Trustees and the Library Director do a walk-through of the facility to determine the areas of greatest need.  The Board of Trustees is dedicated to maintaining the integrity, ambiance and beauty of our beloved Library.   The year’s walk-through identified various projects for 2024-205 to be considered and will thoughtfully allocate funds from the race to the selected projects.

Since the Trustees do not have an income base, the race is the primary funding vehicle for unrestricted monies that cover significant expenses (i.e., projects) for the Board not covered by the Town’s budget.  In the past, proceeds from the race have been spent to refurbish the quiet study area, the teen area, the Lienhard meeting room, the Children’s Department, the monthly fees for the T-Mobile hotspots and even for the purchase of land for the eventual Library Expansion.

The Trustees place a high importance on its fiduciary responsibilities and not-for-profit status. We are members of Network for Good and GuideStar, which has granted us a Gold Seal of Transparency.  Your secure, online tax-deductible donation to the Lucy Robbins Welles Library will help maintain our treasured institution for many years to come.  Please go an extra mile by donating today.

About Lucy Robbins Welles Library

The original library building that still stands today was constructed as a result of a bequest from Miss Fanny A. Welles and a land donation by Miss Welles’ sister, Mary Welles Eddy. The building was named “The Lucy Robbins Welles Library” in honor of Miss Welles’ mother and opened its doors to the public in 1939.

Since that time there have been several renovations to the original building. A wing was added for the Children’s Room in 1960 and a major renovation that greatly expanded the library was completed in 1988. In both cases, the original building with all of its charm and elegance was incorporated into the renovations, creating a unique and inviting mixture of old and new.  In addition, the Board of Trustees purchased an adjoining parcel of land earmarked for a second expansion which has not yet come to fruition; a portion of the land adjacent to the library is currently the site of a parking area.

While library services have changed and expanded over the years, the library’s mission to provide information, education, and cultural enrichment for the Newington community through a commitment to excellence in library resources remains the same.

The library still offers traditional library services including print book collections, programming, and answering reference questions but embraces the use of technology to offer new and exciting services for our patrons.  Downloadable eBooks, eMagazines, digital music, eReaders and the virtual library available 24/7 from the library’s website are some of the many ways we are changing the way we do business with the Newington community.

While the library has seen many changes over the years, the one thing that has not changed is the library staff's commitment to offer excellent customer service.  And, the Board of Trustees is dedicated to maintaining the integrity, ambiance and beauty of our beloved Library.  We want to make everyone feel welcome and have a positive library experience.
