About Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation
The Rich Mountain Battlefield is a site of one of the earliest land battles of the Civil War. On July 11, 1861, a decisive Union victory helped to protect the Wheeling Convention, ensuring West Virginia Statehood - it also secured the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike for the Federal forces and helped launch General McClellan's career as head of the armed forces.
This year, we are hoping to add several improvements to the Battlefield. We have re-erected a new parking kiosk and added part of a new hiking trail. Our goal in the future is to add more amenities to the Battlefield for visitors. Thank you for your support!
