Welcome back to our 4th Annual Daring the Blaze 5K Run/Walk! School's been out, the pandemic's still in, and of course our courageous firefighters never get at a break! We at the Dares Beach Civic Association have been looking forward to our annual 3.1-mile foot race to benefit our local heroes at the Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department! However, in keeping with the well-being of our participants, volunteers, community residents, spectators, and anyone else involved, I am making this a virtual race this yea. As much fun as it would be to get together with you all in person again this Summer for the race, I think the virtual method is the most efficacious for this Summer: We can still compete remotely and serve our local fire department in the same great way we always have!
Fees: Participants 13-and-older: $10
Participants 12-and-under: Free
Amenities: Participate on your own 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) route any time between Saturday, July 25 - Saturday, August 1st.
The virtual race format is new territory for many of us, and in order to preserve the competitive integrity of this race and have fun with it, here are the rules:
1). Develop or find a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) route of your choosing over any terrain and any level of difficulty. Hit the flattest area you can find (such as a track), run up the mountains, hike through the woods, loop through your backyard, jog on the beach, whatever you like. In fact if you are using a wheelchair, you can compete as well in a separate division. You can also push a stroller while you are doing this. If you would rather participate indoors, you can run/walk on a treadmill for 3.1 miles.
2). However and wherever you choose to cover the 5-kilometers, please email me your times (firstname.lastname@example.org). We are doing this on the honor system, so be honest about the time you clock for yourself. This is a race, so I will be compiling the times and by the end of the day on August 1st, all of the results should be in order. You never know, you may earn an award!!!!
3). You do not have to take a photo of yourself, your timing device, and/or your route, but you are welcome to do so if you would like. In addition, if want to submit any photos and have it posted on our event's Facebook community page (www.facebook.com/daringtheblaze5K) just let me know. It's fun to see the variety of routes and photos along the way.

Donations: If you can't participate but would like to contribute, or would like to donate extra to the Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, you can go to their webpage at https://www.pfvfd.org/ and then select DONATE in the upper right.
Course: Since it's a virtual 5-kilometer race, you can choose a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) route to run, jog, walk, treadmill, hike, or wheelchair. There's also an awards category for stroller pushers this year. Since we won't be utilizing our course in Dares Beach, and there will surely be variance in difficulty in the different routes chosen, I will not be keeping track of course and age group records this year. The records will once again come into play once we (hopefully) stage this race in person next Summer in 2021.
Awards: I want to keep it contactless this year, so award winners will be getting an award certificate emailed to them based on if they place in the following categories:
Top 3 overall males and top 3 overall females
Top 3 overall wheelchair (M/F)
Top overall Masters male and female (age 40 & over)
Top overall Dares Beach Resident (male and female)
Top 3 overall participants pushing strollers (M/F)
Top 3 in the following age groups for males and females: 0-12, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80-and-up
* Results will be displayed towards the end of every day of our race week (07/25 - 08/01). They should be fully available on the Facebook page with awards emailed to award winners by Sunday evening, August 2nd.
