The Good and the Bad

It was a beautiful day for this race. Unfortunately, our experience was not positive in the beginning. We have never run this race and my daughter and I registered for the half marathon relay. We were unsure how the relay hand off worked, specifically how to get my daughter to the place where she would start the second leg and then how I would get back to Lambeau for the final mile. When we picked up our packets on Saturday afternoon, the first thing that happened was that the volunteers did not know how to check us in for the relay, so we had to wait for someone else to help us. Once that was taken care of, we specifically asked the question about how to get where we needed to be for the relay points. A volunteer told us that there would be shuttles taking people where they needed to go. This was great news for us since we were not familiar with the route. When we got to the starting line on Sunday morning and asked about the shuttles, no one knew what we were talking about. We walked back to the finish line where we talked to a race official who ended up having to call someone else because he could not answer our question either. We finally got on the phone with a director and we were told there were no shuttles and that we were going to have to drive to the hand off points. We eventually figured it out, but the situation created a great deal of unwanted and unnecessary stress. Something as simple as a statement in the race guide that stated that relay participants needed to have their own transportation to the hand off area would have answered people's questions and solved many problems. I realize that there are far fewer people who do the relay, but that does not mean that people who choose that option should not be treated with respect or have questions answered. Again, simple communication would have been so helpful. The rest of the guide was very thorough; it was just the relay participants who seemed to have been left out of the communication.

This was our first time completing this and we can't say thank you enough to all the volunteers, to the spectators, to the crew who put this all together. It was just unbelievable and we can't say thank you enough! Truly a surreal experience. My husband completed his first marathon and I completed my first half and we are so glad we did it here!

Half Marathon

I liked the long downhill stretch with about 2 miles remaining. I did not like the U-Turn portion at mile 2 or 3 ish. That's a bit strange for a half marathon. My biggest gripe is the food at the end. My sandwich that should have been hot was cool and the fruit was browning. I would suggest a few things: Find someone to sponsor bagels. They don't need to be kept warm or cool. Do not cut up the fruit. After a run a chunk of banana isn't enough anyway. Offer cookies. After running a long distance it is important to eat food that gives you quick energy. While cookies may not be "healthy" they do offer that energy one needs. To be honest I find it a bit surprising that after 20+ years the food thing has not been figured out.

Overall a great race

Well staffed, very nice course, and no big issues. I would change awards and start times. Start the Marathon at 7 and the Half Marathon at 7:30 AM. 5K at 7:45. Awards can be earlier too. 5K awards at 9, Half at 10AM and Marathon at 10:30. It would help get people out of there so they can enjoy more of the day.

GB Marathon (marathon #10)

Very well organized race on par with most other races. Great water and aid stations, good pace groups, somewhat challenging course with a fun finish. Weather wise it was great starting out, but got slightly on the warmer side for the back end, a lot of shade as well. For a smaller marathon it was great and I enjoyed my trip to GB. If you need a midwest spring marathon this is a fun one.

2022 half marathon

I originally signed up for the full marathon but then decided to do one a little earlier in spring due to the knowledge that this one can be hot. I decided to the half on the new course. If you like a challenging course this is the one for you with many hills. I genuinely liked the course but did not try to memorize it like other ones. With the course change, there were a lot fewer people encouraging us along the way. I loved the multiple water stations and they were situated perfectly for my needs. There was plenty of patrols at the corners and I felt safe running the entire route. Loved running through Lambeau Field but if I recall correctly, I remember looking up and seeing myself on the screen. It was disappointing not to have the screen on. My other disappointment was not starting the race at Lambeau FIeld itself. There was no festive feel to the race like other years. After I parked, I had to walk an entire mile to get to the start. It was stated that parking was available at the stadium but for those traveling, to have to walk a mile before getting to a portapotty is undesirable. The food selection was adequate but please remember vegetarian choices and non alcoholic beverages. (And a cookie!) In all, without it having that big run feeling, I felt that the price was too steep. As far as the course, I would do it for this reason as it was challenging but fun. Okay, I loved passing all the walkers up the hills as I run hills almost every day.lol

Awards ceremony - too long of wait!

The bulk of the 5k runners were through by 9:15. By then it is known who the top 3 runners are, and thus who will receive awards. The awards ceremony was scheduled for 11:30. This is a problem for many folks who are out of town and need to get on the road. It’s also a problem given it was a Sunday run, and many people need to get home as they have to work on Monday. The boxes that the awards were in were not even opened until around 10:00, and needed to be sorted by age group and place by volunteers. I do not see why the awards were not unboxed and sorted until then, when that could have been done the night before or earlier in the day. Furthermore, the awards typically start with the youngest age group, and end with the oldest. Why not show some respect for the older runners and award them first so they can get home and take a nap? I appreciated the live band, but since the half marathon and marathon relay were taking place at the same time, it was not stated which group would be awarded first, and just how long the wait would be for any given group. This whole awards ceremony thing needs to be reorganized. I like the idea of having food afterward, but pork sandwiches was a bit odd for mid-morning. I would keep the fruit, and add some chocolate milk and various types of breads or rolls.

Full Marathon

My pacers were great. No real expo which was disappointing. Far less people running the race than they posted on the website. I am pretty sure there was at least 1 missing water station for people running 3:05 pace. I read on Strava from the elite group that they had 3 missing water stations that were not set up. I would be pissed if I were them. The course also changed from what it was in the past which was misleading if you signed up early around 6 months before the race and then had some minor changes in the final few weeks prior to the marathon. I also felt like I had to email the RD to ask them to do things like post information about traffic closures and tracking info to be posted on the website about 1 week out. The course itself is mostly neighborhoods and a bit of river trail. It ends in Lambeau field which is probably great for Packer fans, and miserable for people who don't care because you get slowed down as the half marathoners merge with the full marathoners. Not a great race, but not a horrible one either. I personally wouldn't run it again, but for locals it would probably be a lot of fun.
