Welcome back to Dares Beach for our 3rd Annual Daring the Blaze 5K Run/Walk! School's out, Summer's in, and our brave firefighters never get at a break! We at the Dares Beach Civic Association are looking forward to our annual 3.1-mile foot race in the hilly bayside neighborhood of Dares Beach to benefit our local heroes at the Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department!
Fee: $10 (without an event t-shirt) $20 (with an event t-shirt)
*After, Wednesday, June 5, the price for all registrants goes up to $20 but there won't be any more event t-shirts available before race day, so register early!
Amenities: Post-race food, performance awards, and at least one water stop in the middle of the route.
Rules: Keep dogs leashed, accompany kids under 13, and no skating. Of course, watch for traffic when crossing the streets!
Parking: Park either in the Green at Dares Beach & Macrae Avenue, or on the shoulders along Dares Beach Road.
Donations: If you can't make it but would like to contribute, or would like to donate extra to the Prince Frederick Volunteer Fire Department, you can go to their webpage at https://www.pfvfd.org/ and then select DONATE in the upper left.
Course: The course map is available on this Race Entry page, and will be the same as last year's! While this race would probably be considered one of the hilliest 5-kilometer road races in southern MD, the event has had a competitive yet friendly atmosphere as neighbors, friends, and residents come out to cheer the runners and walkers on. Dares Beach is located right along the Chesapeake Bay on the coast of Prince Frederick, so you will get to take in nice views of the water, as well as a combination of both, rural roads and neighborhood streets all within a few miles of each other.
Here is a brief description: The route starts and ends at the neighborhood Green (specifically at the intersection of Dares Beach Road and Chesapeake Avenue). Participants head west on Dares Beach Road and proceed for well over a 1/4-mile before turning around and heading back to the start line. Then, they make a left onto Chesapeake Avenue, and head north where they will weave through the rolling streets of Dares Beach before heading back onto Chesapeake Avenue to finish on Dares Beach Road.
Course will be marked and marshaled by volunteers, miles 1-3 will be marked, and you will encounter some of our signature hills (such as "Lil' Miss Shannon", "The Wild West", and of course, "The Crest" (aka "The Crest Stress Test" as dubbed by some participants in our first year).
If you are returning, you can have a fair shot of beating your time from last year if you choose. You also never know if you'll set a new age group record! That said, let's take a look at the awards:
Awards: Awards will be upgraded a little bit in their quality from last year. I will probably get some medals (and possibly a few trophies) from Crown Awards, but we will keep the award certificates as well. Award categories are the same as they have been, and here they are:
Top 3 overall males and top 3 overall females
Top overall Masters male and female (age 40 & over)
Top overall Dares Beach Resident (male and female)
Top 3 in the following age groups for males and females: 0-12, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80-and-up
