The priority of the Prince of Wales Marathon organizing committee is the health and safety of our participants, volunteers, spectators, sponsors and professionals involved in the marathon. It is with great difficulty that we must announce the the Prince of Wales Marathon, Half Marathon and Relays has been postponed due to mass-gathering and travel restrictions related to the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic. The event will be postponed until May 29, 2021. Current registrants will be automatically deferred to 2021 at no additional cost.
The committee is united in prioritizing the health and safety of everyone in the community. We are working hard behind the scenes to keep you updated and are proactively planning for the next season of activity. For now, we believe that the most important thing that we can focus on is our shared sense of responsibility to each other as a community, to keep each other safe, and to follow the necessary measures set forth.
Our hearts and thoughts are with all of our participants and sponsors, past and present, and their families during this difficult time.
Prince of Wales Marathon Committee
We invite runners and walkers to experience the third largest island in the U.S. during the 21st Annual Prince of Wales Island Marathon and Relays and 9th Annual Half Marathon, Saturday, May 23, 2020 in southeast Alaska. The course is the standard marathon distance of 26.2 miles and is USATF certified, #AK14007FW. The out-and-back course beginning in Craig is one of the most inspirational and scenic routes in Alaska. Divisions include full marathon and half-marathon as well as 4 and 8 person marathon relay teams. We welcome runners and walkers. (Please note: walkers will begin the course at 8:00 am with runners.) Early Bird (register before midnight April 15, 2020) discounted rates are as follows: full marathon-$50, half marathon-$45, relay team captain/member-$40. Regular registration (April 16th until close at midnight May 20th) rates are as follows: full marathon-$65, half marathon-$60, relay team captain/member-$55.
The course will provide a challenge for all participants beginning and ending at the Craig High School, Craig, AK. The course will take you through mountain vistas and stunning scenery. Glimpses during your run or walk of wildlife are not uncommon.
Race packets and shirts will be available for pick up at the CTA Hall in Craig (race headquarters), Friday May 22, from 2:00 until 8:00 pm. (Beginning with the 2020 event, in person registrations will no longer be accepted on Friday before the event.) A reasonably priced dinner will be available Friday evening 6:00 to 7:30 pm at the CTA Hall. Participant orientation will follow dinner and our guest speaker will conclude the evening's festivities.
Saturday, transportation will be provided from local lodges and bed and breakfast establishments to the starting line at Craig High School for those participants who make the request at the CTA Hall Race Headquarters on Friday, May 22nd, 2:00 to 8:00 pm. Please note, there will be NO registrations accepted Saturday morning for the event.
Saturday morning the event begins at Craig High School at 8:00 am (check-in for all participants begins at 7:00 am) for all categories including marathon walkers. The course will be open for eight hours. The event will end at the Craig High School where post race food items, including our traditional homemade cookie station, will be available. Ten minute massages will also be available for a nominal fee. An after event splash will be available at the local Craig indoor pool. Van transportation to local lodging facilities will be available.
In order to guarantee a shirt for race day please take advantage of Early Bird rates and register before midnight Alaska Time April 15th. Standard registration rates will apply for those registering after midnight (Alaska Time) April 15th and a shirt will be ordered but may not be received by race day.
Online registration will close at midnight Alaska Time, Wednesday, May 20th. PLEASE NOTE a change for Friday in person registration procedure - Beginning with the 2020 event in person registrations WILL NOT be accepted Friday, May 22nd at CTA Hall, Race Headquarters.
